Public Law Update – SB 93 aims to change many things about Ohio’s Open Meeting Act, including when it’s triggered. While supporters of SB 93 believe the bill will close loopholes, others may not so readily agree. Since 1993, meetings that are strictly of an investigative/information-seeking nature and do not involve deliberations were not governed by the Sunshine Law. SB 93 would change this by expanding the definition of a public meeting. “Deliberations upon official business” would become “consideration or discussion of public business.” In essence, your boards and sub-committees will lose two essential tools: information-gathering and fact-finding.
